Northern Flicker

We've had a couple of woodpeckers in the neighborhood excavating a potential nest cavity this week. I saw the male working on it last spring, but then he appeared to abandon it. The project was given new life this spring, but again, I wonder if the site will be abandoned; I saw a squirrel poking its rodent face out of the hollow today.
